What to expect from COP30? – Perspectives from Fragile and Conflict Affected Settings like the Philippines

The increased frequency and intensity of climate impacts bring with them a higher risk of violent conflict. Climate change indirectly contributes to rising levels of conflict, for example, by placing additional strain on already depleted resources or through intermediate factors such as weak governance.

In November, the international UNFCCC Climate Conference (COP30) will take place in Belém, Brazil. Climate and peacebuilding experts have prepared a set of policy recommendations in the current COP30 Policy Brief. How can increasing climate resilience and building peace be linked? And what should COP30 deliver?

Nikki de la Rosa from the Philippines will share insights into how climate change, conflict, and fragility intersect in affected communities. Her perspective will illustrate why climate policy and all climate-related engagement – whether focused on mitigation, adaptation, or responding to loss and damage – must be conflict-sensitive and closely linked to peacebuilding efforts in order to increase the success and sustainability of climate action
and prevent the escalation of tensions into violence.

We cordially invite you to a Roundtable Meeting with input from:
