In memory of Jochen Motte
As a member of the German Federal Government’s Advisory Council on Civilian Crisis Prevention and Peace Promotion since its inception, he has played a decisive role in shaping its work for over 20 years. Jochen Motte joined the United Evangelical Mission (UEM) in 1992 and headed the Justice, Peace and Integrity of Creation department for many years. From 2006, he served as Deputy General Secretary of the UEM for 15 years.
Against the backdrop of his rich international experience, Jochen Motte was a staunch advocate for the defence and strengthening of human rights, bringing great conviction, professional depth and personal commitment to the cause. This concern permeated his entire professional career and was consistently reflected in his work on the Advisory Council and in his dialogue with the German Federal Government. He was never concerned solely with political concepts, but always with the concrete effects on the lives of people in crisis and conflict regions.
Jochen Motte was also a long-standing member of the Coordination Group of the Human Rights Forum, where he established sustainable structures for dialogue between civil society, parliament and the Federal Government. The Human Rights Forum is a network that brings together over 50 German non-governmental organisations to anchor human rights in politics.
We knew Jochen Motte as a clear-minded, approachable and reliable colleague who argued with poise, calmness and great integrity. His advice was valued, his commitment binding, his focus always on the essentials. He was a valued advisor, mentor and friend to many. We thank Jochen Motte for his life’s work, his vision and his unwavering commitment.
His death leaves a huge void, and we will greatly miss his enthusiasm for standing up for what he believed was right. We will remember Jochen Motte with gratitude.
