Professor Gießmann’s work focuses on peace efforts in asymmetric violent conflicts, currently in Afghanistan and Ethiopia. From 2009 to 2014, he was a member of the Global Advisory Boards “Terrorism and Weapons of Mass Destruction” and “Terrorism” at the World Economic Forum, for the latter as Chair in 2011 and 2012. He is a member of the Board of the German Atlantic Society and, since 2022, was a member of the German Bundestag’s Commission of Inquiry “Lessons from Afghanistan for Germany’s Future Integrated Engagement”.
As an author, editor and co-editor, he has published more than 40 books as well as around 350 academic and journalistic texts.
