Prof. Hans-Joachim Gießmann is Senior Advisor of the Berghof Foundation and as, up to 2019, the Managing Director. He has been a member of the Advisory Board since 2005 and is involved in the Climate Change and Security project.

Professor Gießmann’s work focuses on peace efforts in asymmetric violent conflicts, currently in Afghanistan and Ethiopia. From 2009 to 2014, he was a member of the Global Advisory Boards “Terrorism and Weapons of Mass Destruction” and “Terrorism” at the World Economic Forum, for the latter as Chair in 2011 and 2012. He is a member of the Board of the German Atlantic Society and, since 2022, a member of the German Bundestag’s Commission of Inquiry “Lessons from Afghanistan for Germany’s Future Networked Engagement”.

As an author, editor and co-editor, he has published more than 40 books as well as around 350 academic and journalistic texts.
