Prof. Hans-Joachim Gießmann is Senior Advisor of the Berghof Foundation and as, up to 2019, the Managing Director. He has been a member of the Advisory Board since 2005 and is involved in the Climate Change and Security project.
The focus of Prof. Hans-Joachim Gießmann’s work is the peace effort primarily in Afghanistan and Ethiopia. From 2009 to 2014 he was a member of the global Advisory Boards “Terrorism and Weapons of Mass Destruction” and “Terrorism” within the World Economic Forum. He chaired the board on terrorism in 2011 and 2012. He is a member of the steering committee of the German Atlantic Association and a member of the directorate of the European Master’s Programme in Human Rights and Democratisation.
As an author, editor and co-editor, he has published more than 40 books as well as around 350 academic and journalistic texts.
