
As a former member of the Bundestag, Winfried Nachtwei was, from 2002, an advisor on security and disarmament policy for the party Bündnis 90/Grüne [Alliance 90/The Greens]. He participated in 70 mandate decisions and has visited more than 40 crisis operations (particularly in the Balkans and in Afghanistan). As part of these visits, he compiled extensive reports on the respective civil, military and policing components of the operations and their effectiveness. Since the end of the 1980s, he has been focused on civilian crisis prevention, responsibility for protection, crisis engagement, foreign operations, peacebuilding and memory work (e.g. on the German Riga Committee).
In addition, Winfried Nachtwei is also a member of the Advisory Council on Leadership Development and Civic Education within the Federal Ministry of Defence, a member of the steering committee of the United Nations Association of Germany, and a member of the steering committee of the association Gegen Vergessen – Für Demokratie [Against Forgetting – For Democracy].
From 2011 to 2018 he was Co-Chair of the Advisory Board for Civilian Crisis Prevention and Peacebuilding.
