As a (former) member of the Bundestag, Winfried Nachtwei was security and disarmament policy spokesman for the Bündnis 90/Grüne parliamentary group from 2002. He was involved in 70 mandate decisions and made more than 40 visits to crisis operations (especially in the Balkans and Afghanistan). During these visits, he compiled comprehensive reports on the respective civilian, military and police components of the missions and their effectiveness.
Since the end of the 1980s, his focus has been on civil crisis prevention, responsibility to protect, crisis engagement, foreign missions, peacebuilding and remembrance work (especially on the German war of vengeance in the East and within the framework of the German Riga Committee).
Winfried Nachtwei is also a member of the Advisory Council on Issues of Innere Führung at the Federal Ministry of Defense, a member of the Presidium of the German United Nations Association, a board member of the association ” Gegen Vergessen – Für Demokratie” (“Against Forgetting – For Democracy”), and an expert in the Bundestag’s Commission of Inquiry on Germany’s engagement in Afghanistan.
From 2011 to 2018, he was co-chair of the Advisory Board for Civilian Crisis Prevention and Peacebuilding.
